A portable oxygen concentrator is a machine you rely on every day, so a little regular care goes a long way. The good news is that maintenance is simple. This guide covers when to replace the filter element, when to replace the molecular sieve, how to care for your machine day to day, and how to choose the right machine type for day and night.
Maintenance at a glance
- Filter element: about every 2 months with 4 hours of daily use, or sooner if it looks visibly yellow.
- Molecular sieve: usually about once a year.
- Nasal cannula: replace regularly, following the user manual.
- Battery and charging: use only the supplied adapter and car charger, and charge as described below.
- Daily: keep the air intake and vents clear, and wipe the outside of the machine when it is switched off and unplugged.
When should I replace the filter element?
The filter element keeps dust and particles out of your machine, which helps it run properly. A good rule of thumb: if you use your concentrator about 4 hours a day, replace the filter element about every 2 months.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Replace it when it turns visibly yellow, even if two months haven't passed.
- Use more, replace sooner. If you run your machine for more hours each day, or live in a dusty home or a home with pets, check the filter more often.
- Never run the machine without a filter.
Every machine from PortableOxygenShop ships with 3 filter elements in the box, and replacements are available in our accessories collection.
When should I replace the molecular sieve?
The sieve bed is the part that separates oxygen from the air. Like any working part, it wears over time. Most users need to replace it about once a year.
The sieve bed is replaceable, which is one of the biggest advantages of our machines. When it wears down, you can replace the sieve instead of replacing the whole machine, helping your concentrator serve you for many years of daily use.
Signs the sieve may be due for replacement:
- The machine's oxygen output seems lower than it used to be.
- Your oxygen readings are lower than usual.
- It has been around a year since the sieve was installed.
If you notice any of these, please contact our team at 1-(877) 767-8699 and we'll help you check. If you feel unwell or unusually tired, talk to your physician right away. Don't rely on the machine alone to decide what's going on.
Daily care checklist
These quick habits keep your machine in good shape:
- Keep the air intake and vents clear. Place the machine where air can move freely around it. Don't cover it with blankets or push it against a wall.
- Wipe the outside gently. Turn the machine off, unplug it, and use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Don't spray liquids onto the machine or let water get inside.
- Keep it out of heat and dust. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators and very dusty rooms. Don't leave it in a hot car.
- Handle with care. Use the carry bag and straps when you move around, and avoid dropping or knocking the machine.
- Replace the nasal cannula regularly, following the user manual. A fresh cannula is more comfortable and more hygienic.
- Don't open the machine yourself. If something seems wrong, contact us first. Unauthorized repairs can affect your warranty.
Charging and battery tips
The battery is easy to look after if you know two simple rules.
Two ways to charge the battery:
- Charge inside the machine. Put the battery in the machine, turn the machine off, and connect the power adapter. The battery will charge automatically.
- Charge the battery on its own. Connect the power adapter, the battery charging cable and the battery.
Important: the battery does not charge while the machine is running. If the machine is on, the battery won't charge, even when the adapter is connected. The same applies to the car charger. If you want a full battery, turn the machine off or charge the battery separately.
Use only the supplied adapter and car charger. Adapters and car chargers from other devices may have a different voltage or current, which can damage your machine. Damage from unapproved power sources isn't covered by warranty.
Before a trip, charge your battery fully, and bring your car charger and adapter.
Safety reminders for oxygen use
- Keep oxygen equipment away from open flames, cigarettes and other heat sources. Never smoke near your machine.
- Don't use oil, grease or flammable products on or near the machine or the cannula.
- Place the machine on a stable surface, and keep the tubing out of walking paths to avoid tripping.
- Always follow the oxygen setting prescribed by your physician.
Warranty and support
We want you to use your machine every day for many years. Your concentrator's main unit is covered by a 2-year limited warranty, and you can return it within 30 days of delivery. Accessories have their own coverage, and consumable parts such as filter elements and molecular sieves aren't covered by warranty. See our Warranty Policy and Return & Refund Policy for details.
